I typed this out elsewhere in reference to a specific argument, then realized it’s pretty much a global statement on my position in regard to, well, anything:

I do not accept any argument that starts with “you weren’t here then”, because they invariably exclude me. Further, they tend not to recognize the people like me who were doing [whatever the action under discussion is] way back when. I’m here now, and I expect the whole freaking world to recognize that.

History can be a useful guide in assessing how we got to where we are now, and in determining where we should go next. But it should never be a hard limit.
