deciding

One of the rough things about travel is having to make so many tiny decisions - we're getting ready to head off to Malaysia obscenely early Monday morning, and so I'm trying to figure out big suitcase (half empty) or little one (crammed), which skirt to take, whether to take the laptop, whether to call the cab for o'dark or o'dark thirty, how many pair of shoes I need.... and none of it really matters. Sometimes I think the big decisions are much simpler to make.

(Unfortunately, neither one of us is good at "what shall we have for dinner tonight?")

I've got a bit of that going on (with the packing, that is -- I picked up sushi for dinner): the frugal part of me doesn't want to fritter KZs and EURs on paper, toothpaste, and other sundries that I have plenty of here at home -- but I'm doing so much walking/train-hopping (and fees for checked luggage have become OBSCENE) that one backpack and a tote bag are all I'm willing to carry. Which, yeah, I've done with less for motorcycle trips, but I didn't have to include my concert outfit, score, folder, and laptop. (I'd planned to be clear of work before I left, but it's looking less and less likely. Thank goodness for online access to the Chicago Manual of Style -- and likewise for Google calendar, because the Franklin Planner is also too bulky to bring along.) And I'm hoping my note to the choir administrator won't rub her the wrong way (suggesting that one of the orientation sessions be offered at an alternate time, because I'd really like to attend worship at the Prague Unitarian church, and I'd bet others would love to attend a local Mass, etc.)...

Collectively all a nice problem to have, of course. Is Malaysia for business or pleasure or both? In any case, safe journeys!
