When Mitt Romney is good, he’s very, very good (MA healthcare, SLC Olympics), but in this campaign, he’s mostly been horrid. In the very last moment, though, he showed a flicker of the good Romney, and it’s worth quoting here for truth:

The nation, as you know, is at a critical point. At a time like this, we can’t risk partisan bickering and political posturing. Our leaders have to reach across the aisle to do the people’s work. And we citizens also have to rise to the occasion. We look to our teachers and professors. We count on you not just to teach, but to inspire our children with a passion for learning and discovery.

We look to our pastors and priests and rabbis and counselors of all kinds to testify of the enduring principles upon which our society is built — honesty, charity, integrity and family. We look to our parents, for in the final analysis, everything depends on the success of our homes. We look to job creators of all kinds. We’re counting on you to invest, to hire, to step forward. And we look to Democrats and Republicans in government at all levels to put the people before the politics.

I believe in America. I believe in the people of America.

I hope he and his party will live up to those words; I hope that my faith in the Democratic party doing so is justified.

I was fascinated by the New Yorker's Rick Hertzberg's tweets on the topic. The first was, "If I were Obama I'd try to find something for Romney to do—something important to manage. He's good at it and he has no future in the GOP. " And his reaction to the concession speech: "That was dignified. Romney offered no warmth to the right-wing crazies and received none. The room was ice cold."

That's often a good idea when you have any kind of group and someone in it is making trouble and complaining all the time. Give him something to manage himself - preferably one of the things he's been comp,singing about. (Though despite his clear experience I'd be a bit scared to give him, say, the full deployment of Obamacare. But for someone gutsier than I am, that just might work.)
