Later note: Not really expecting comments - I posted this here by mistake; it was intended for the [livejournal.com profile] advancedfitness community.

In summer, I tend to row a little less and erg more (erg = Concept II rowing machine) because I live near Phoenix. It was over 95 this morning at 5AM at the lake in Tempe. I try to get out on real water at least once a week, though, so I don't totally lose my rowing form. It's a little different on the erg because you don't get to practice bladework, but the basic stroke is the same. For those of you who are into sports like running and cycling, what are your experiences with treadmills and indoor cycles? Are they an adequate or inadequate substitute for the real deal?

Second question: right now I've scoped down my rowing a little because I'm working on another project (an IFR rating). I'm not racing this year, but am trying to train enough to maintain a decent level of form and fitness so I won't be in terrible shape when I get back to it. I'm working out 3-4 times a week, splitting that between rowing/erging and lifting. For comparison, in training I shoot for five sessions/week, three on the water and two lifting, and I would alter during the year from long steady-state pieces to shorter intervals, using periodization based on my race schedule. More serious competitive rowers work out 6 days a week, usually two workouts a day, but those would be the people who don't have day jobs. Does anyone have experience with training to maintain during an off period from your sport? If so, what did you do and how did it work for you?
