A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
I always did like that bit. I've never come close to setting a bone or butchering a hog; I can carve a turkey and have been trained in CPR (and once attmempted to give it) but that's all. The closest I've come to designing a building is laying out a floor plan, with no real attention to ductwork and all that. I can analyze the mathematics of a truss, though. I interpreted "conn a ship" to be equivalent to flying an airplane. As far as spaceships go, the closest I've come is flying the Fixed-Base Space Shuttle astronaut trainer at the Johnson Space Center (the real one, not the ones in the visitor center. I got to ride in the Motion-Base once, but not to fly it.
